This course includes two parts: philosophy of art and the theory of beauty. In the part of philosophy of art, the following topics are treated: the essence and definition of art (art as imitation, expression, sign, symbol, metaphor, play, festival, text, sublimation of desire), the elements of an artwork (form, content, medium, meaning, style, intention, expression), the interpretation and criticism of art, the characteristics and problems of 20th century art (including abstract art in painting and sculpture, the twelve-tone music of the Viena School, the minimalistic art movement). As for the theory of beauty, treated topics include the objective/subjective debate of the quality of beauty (Plato’s, Aquinas’s, Kant’s, Schopenhauer’s theory are discussed), the concept of aesthetic attitude, psychical distance, ugliness, sublimity, the nature of aesthetic judgment (Kant’s theory), and the relation between truth, goodness, and beauty. |
